While it is a little of the beaten track, Uruguay is a delightful country to visit and should not be missed if you are travelling in Argentina, especially with the ease of travel from Buenos Aires.
Uruguay used to be Latin America’s best kept secret, now however, no self-respecting gringo backpacker or visitor can say they’ve really travelled in South America if they haven’t crossed the Rio de la Plata see the historic capital, Montevideo via the smugglers’s port of Colonia del Sacramento and travelled to the beach resorts of Punta del Este and Punta del Diablo; and for the more adventurous, a trip up Ruta 3 to the thermal springs in Salto.
